From results to a useful conversation

Build a shortlist you can actually compare

You do not need to contact every office. Start with a few providers whose published services appear relevant, then check the same practical questions with each one.

01 / Find a possible fit

Search for the task, then the place

Choose an area of law and a state, then add a suburb or provider name if you need to narrow the results. If you receive no matches, remove one filter at a time. An office may use a different service label from the words you first tried.

A keyword search can match a business name or service as well as a location. Use the suburb index when you want the offices recorded in one exact locality. A short list describes our published coverage, not every provider available to you.

Browse exact suburb pages ↗
02 / Check the person and service

Read the profile as a starting point

Record who would advise you, whether they handle the work you need and which jurisdiction applies. A broad practice-area label is not proof of specialist accreditation. An office address does not tell you whether a particular adviser is available.

Ask the provider how to check their current credentials and who will be responsible for your matter. If contact details are flagged for review, use an independently confirmed contact channel rather than assuming an old listing is correct.

Check credentials and identity ↗
03 / Compare the engagement

Make the written scope your reference

Ask what the first appointment includes: document reading, discussion, written advice or a proposal for later work. Compare professional fees, GST and external expenses on the same basis. Leave anything unconfirmed marked as unknown.

Check the person handling the work, response arrangements and what could trigger extra charges. A lower headline price can cover fewer tasks; the comparison is useful only when you understand the difference.

Compare confirmed quote inclusions ↗

A practical example: when two results look similar

Imagine two offices both list property work. One offers a first contract discussion; the other proposes reviewing the document and preparing amendments. Their prices cannot tell you which service is suitable until you clarify the work. Send the same short outline to both, identify any date you have been given and ask each to describe its deliverables and exclusions.

This fictional example is a way to organise your questions, not a recommendation about the legal work you need. A qualified adviser must assess that against your circumstances. Use the enquiry planner to prepare your questions without entering a personal account of the matter.

General preparation information, not legal advice. Rules and options depend on your circumstances and jurisdiction. Check current official information and speak with a qualified adviser about documents, rights or deadlines.
